What the client needed.
An event deck on sand has no architecture to work with: no walls, no ceiling, nothing vertical, and a horizon that flattens everything in a photograph. What it needs is height that belongs to the beach rather than to a stage rig. The pieces also have to move — an event set is built, used and struck, so nothing could depend on being fixed into the ground for a season. And because the deck is used at sunset, every element is seen against the light for the hours that matter most, which is exactly when a badly made silhouette shows.
How we designed it.
We made the verticals ourselves: fibre palms with hand-braided rope trunks, topped with macramé-fringed canopies that behave like fronds — the fringe moves in the onshore wind and throws a broken shadow across the sand instead of a solid disc. Braided at that thickness, the trunk holds its own shape and stays sound when the piece is moved. Around them, draped cabanas define rooms on an open deck without building walls, and the palette stays in golds and naturals so everything reads warm against a sunset instead of turning into a black cut-out. The palms carry the same craft at every distance: a silhouette from the water, a fringed canopy from the deck, a visible braid up close at the walkway.
