What the client needed.
A private client is not buying a hotel standard. The pool is where this house entertains, the pergola over it was the only structure in the garden, and the owner wanted one piece there that could not be found anywhere else — colour, not the natural palette that every resort in the region already uses. Two conditions shaped the design more than the taste did. The canopy sits directly above open water, so half of it is always seen as a reflection. And the garden is used mostly after dark, which means the piece is lit from below and read as a silhouette for most of the hours it is looked at.
How we designed it.
We wove the canopy in graded panels — red, bronze, gold, navy and teal running across its length — so the reflection in the pool carries the colour as a moving version of the piece rather than a copy of it. The weave is deliberately open and finished in long fringe: in daylight it drops a coloured, moving shade over the daybeds instead of a flat block of shadow, and at night the warm lanterns above it pass through the gaps so the whole ceiling glows from within rather than being lit on its face. Braided rope columns carry it down to the deck and give the pergola a hand-made structure to stand on. The canopy was made to the pergola’s exact span in our Antalya atelier and installed as one piece. Out of respect for the client, the property is not named and its location is not published.
