Rope renewal along the sea jetty at NG Phaselis Bay — hand-spliced natural rope balustrades from the shoreline stairs out to the sea platform, with jute-wrapped columns and a woven backdrop wall in the beach lounge.
What the client needed.
The jetty is the walk every guest at Phaselis Bay takes: out over the water to the sea platform, and back along the rocky shore. Its balustrade is rope, and rope on that walk is a consumable — it is held, leaned on and washed with salt every day of the season, and once it greys and slackens it takes the whole approach down with it. The resort needed that rail renewed and kept renewable: sound enough to be the only thing between a guest and the sea, and honest enough that nobody looks at it and thinks maintenance. The same visit covered the beach lounge, where the columns and the wall behind the seating needed to belong to the jetty rather than to the furniture catalogue.
How we designed it.
The jetty rail was re-run in fresh natural rope, swagged post to post at a constant drop so the rhythm reads down the whole walk from the beach, and hand-spliced at every fixing instead of clamped — a splice sits flush, leaves nothing sharp where hands run, and is what makes the rail renewable a section at a time without touching the posts. The posts themselves are wrapped where a hand naturally lands. On the rocky shore stairs the same rail continues with the post spacing set to the stone rather than to a grid, so the walk reads as one line from the water. In the beach lounge, the rope goes vertical: structural columns and a pine trunk wrapped in continuous jute, so the pavilion reads as one material with the deck, and a backdrop wall of hand-wound wool balls over a knotted fringe hung where guests sit facing the sea. Undyed throughout — on this coast anything dyed gives itself away by the second season, and undyed rope lets the renewed sections settle in with the old.
