The open-air garden lounge at Lucky Monkey Hotel — handwoven cotton macramé shade panels on bamboo frames, woven pendant lighting, and a floor-level set of jute poufs, rugs and rope-fringe cushions for barefoot seating.
What the client needed.
A boutique property does not have a lobby to make its impression in — it has one outdoor room, and here that room is the garden lounge where guests eat breakfast, work in the afternoon and drink at night. There was no built structure to hang anything from: no pergola, no beam, no wall to fix a canopy to. The hotel also seats people low and barefoot, on the ground rather than in dining chairs, which changes what has to be handled and how often it will be washed. Everything we made had to be free-standing, movable at the end of the season, and hard-wearing at ankle height.
How we designed it.
We built the shade around bamboo frames instead of the building — knotted white cotton panels with a deep fringe, tensioned into frames that stand on their own and can be taken down and stored between seasons. That decision set the whole palette: white cotton overhead against the sky, natural jute below. On the ground we made the layer guests actually sit in — woven runner rugs, jute poufs and rope-fringe cushions in earth tones, sized so a group can rearrange them around a low table without help from staff. Woven pendants in wood-and-rope mounts light the lounge from just above head height, keeping the warm light and the weave in the same sightline. Everything is one material family, so a piece that wears out is replaced rather than the room being restyled.
