What the client needed.
Ethno is built around large outdoor structures: a tensile roof over the lounge, a conical tented pavilion, open terraces under full Belek sun. Engineering at that size tends to read as engineering — steel, cable, membrane — and the concept the hotel is named for asks for the opposite. The task was to bring handwork up to the scale of the architecture without hiding it, and to do it in a palette that sits with the ochre, the timber and the dense tropical planting already on site. Shade was the functional half of the brief; the terraces are unusable at midday without it.
How we designed it.
The working piece is a diamond-lattice canopy: open enough that hot air rises straight through instead of pooling underneath, tight enough that it lays a moving pattern of shade across the billiards terrace and the lounge. Deep fringe finishes every edge, and that fringe became the connective motif — the same finish appears on the valance of the conical pavilion, so two structures that share no geometry still read as one property. At ground level, hand-twisted rope columns in warm ochre and braided screens are set into the planting, which is where the material meets the guest at arm’s length. Macramé palms under the tensile roof carry the concept indoors, and a fringed hammock on a curved timber stand is the smallest piece in the project and the one guests use longest. Everything was made to measure for the structure it hangs from — none of it is a standard size.
